PRESIDENTIAL CORRUPTION LOOMS IF SOLYNDRA DEAL IS REALLY OPENED UP
It takes a lot of spending to blow half a billion dollars in a year or so. Of course our government blows more than that, even faster, but the Solyndra solar "government backed loan deal" smells really bad. Add to that the many visits by Solyndra's top guy to the White House and the President's visit showcasing Solyndra as the example of the future of energy and the smell gets even worse. Even if there is no outright corruption due to the White House involvement, it is a glaring example of how clueless President Obama and his minions are about business and how it works--or doesn't.
IF YOU READ MY RECENT FORBES BLOG, THIS WILL SEEM FAMILIAR
I had this very discussion with my Congressman on Monday, and posted this as part of my FORBES blog on Tuesday:
PRESIDENTIAL POLICIES--INSANITY
One definition of Insanity is “doing the same things over and over and expecting a different outcome.” If that doesn’t fit the Obama Jobs program and the Debt Reduction program, I don’t know what does. The Obama Jobs program is so filled with ludicrous anti-business crap that it doesn’t even warrant discussion. IBD Editorials termed it “Dumb and Dumber” and that was about right. The best jobs program I’ve heard of is called“Replace Obama.” Now that one would stimulate growth! Here's the insanity of the President’s deficit reduction plans:
1. Spend a lot of money--NOW Spend more money that the USA doesn’t have, but lie and claim “it’s paid for” and keep on spending $1.50 for every dollar that comes in, as deficits climb past $1.5 Trillion per year! There are a lot of fifth graders that would see how stupid that plan is.
2. Save a little bit of money--LATER Spread the spending cuts way out in the future, but make a big deal about it now. Shove the savings out into to the time when future Congresses and Presidents can worry about it (after Obama’s long gone).
3. Ignore the insolvency of Social Security & Medicare--FOREVER Take a teeny nibble at entitlements and make a big deal of that too—but don’t really change anything, so they remain economically certain to fail—but in the future (after Obama’s long gone).
4. Raise taxes, on as many “wealthy” people as possible even though it doesn’t solve anything--BUT NOTHING ELSE HAS WORKED EITHER Use “class warfare” and hammer the “rich fat-cats” and “greedy oil companies,” but plan the real taxes to hit tens of thousands of small business owners making $250,000 per year—and do this in the face of an impending double dip recession.
NOTE: Create any further disincentive to earn and watch the growth in the economy slow down even worse, as more wealth creators “take their money off the table” and let jobs drop even further. Unemployment will be 11% before it drops to 7%—watch, you’ll see.
5. Declare victory--MAKE ANOTHER CAMPAIGN SPEECH AND WATCH WALL STREET PLUMMET Blame the opposition for blocking these “brilliant programs to help Americans get back to work again.” What utter nonsense this President is pitching to the American people—but it’s packaged in a wrapping of lies and populist clichés that many of them will believe. It is a moral, and national tragedy.
THAT'S NOT ALL: BARACK OBAMA LIED TO ALL AMERICANS ABOUT HIS TAX ON MILLIONAIRES AND BILLIONAIRES
I'm sure his staff is diligently searching for a few instances to support his misstatements--to avoid being caught in such a blatant lie. BUT, Both the WSJ and AP "busted" Obama with factual information that exposed the untruths in his statements about why we should tax the wealthy because it was just "fair."
(Read more on President Obama's idea of "fairness" in a later attachment.)
AND HERE'S IS THE TABLE FROM THE WSJ ARTICLE (2009 data looks largely the same).
BUSINESSES MUST REALIZE: EVEN WITH CURRENT WEAKNESS IN THE ECONOMY, THERE IS STILL A LOT OF BUSINESS OUT THERE
Demand is weak by comparison to prior years because the recovery is not really a recovery--it is a stagnation--but still at current levels, there is a lot of business being done in the USA. When retailers post small or no "comp store gains" it simply means that there was no increase over the prior year. Population growth in the US remains around 3%, and since most new entrants to the work force can't find jobs (and millions more remain unemployed), growth is likely to remain below 3% for a long time. Inflation had abated, now that gas prices are down, and many commodity surges have backed off as well. That means companies can't depend on inflation to generate additional sales revenue.
A DOWN ECONOMY IS A GREAT TIME TO GAIN MARKET POSITION TO EXPLOIT WHEN IT MOVES UPWARD
So many companies blame their decline on the "weak economy," or the "recession" or the "weak recovery," that they barely notice competitors stealing their market position. Note that I didn't say "market share," since it is possible to gain a better position with the share gains coming later. Most purchasing decisions and supplier shifts take months to occur. Gain the position now, reap the rewards later. Determine which products are the weakest performers in your line or in competitors offerings and target them. Replace the weak ones with new, stronger offerings and any recovery at all will give you meaningful growth.
MOVING UP WHEN THE MARKET IS BARELY MOVING
Even if there is continued stagnation and very low growth, replacing poor performing products with better ones (or poor performing customers with better ones) will yield growth in revenue and market share, whenever it is fully implemented. So don't write off losses to the weak economy. You may be getting your "pocket picked," and don't sit idly by and accept flat sales. Get out there and find out what sells best and do more of that. Get rid of your "dogs," replace your competitors "dogs" and suddenly, your results will improve--no matter how foolish the government's policies might be.
After all, if you don't look out for your company, who will? Not the government and certainly not your competitors. YOU!
DEBATE OR DEBACLE?
The Fox News-Google-GOP debate last night wasn't a debate, it was a debacle--for Rick Perry anyway. Lots has been written already about how Perry fumbled and stumbled his way through it--trying to attack Mitt Romney with an assortment of poorly executed lines. Let's face it: politicians who are comfy in Texas seem to have trouble articulating their views on the big stage. George Bush struggled through his entire two terms with his Texas twang, malapropisms and mis-pronouncements. Rick Perry did it last night--and he voiced some decidedly shaky--Texas only--policies. Perry is learning why he thought it was so easy to pick on Romney. When you are governor, you serve the people of that state, and you end up favoring things peculiar to that state--like what has been dubbed "Romneycare." What media misses is that the version passed contained several things Romney tried to veto, but was overridden. After all, it was MA, one of the most liberal states in the country. Now it's Perry's turn.
SECOND-BANANA QUESTIONS
Last night Santorum shone and Bachman bombed. Her screed about her (narrow) agenda is wearing thin among all but dedicated Tea Partiers. Santorum's knowledge and foreign affairs savvy elevated him above several others who don't have it. Herman Cain continues to be a dose of honest solutions, simply stated. Jon Huntsman is so calm I wish someone would wake him up and tell him he's losing badly. Ron Paul is still Ron Paul...love him or hate him. Newt is stlll Newt. He's forgotten more policy and good ideas than most of these people know. Last night he echoed my proposal to require that anyone getting extended unemployment much go to and through a business operated training program to make them employable. Skip classes and lose your unemployment. Then after 99 weeks (or less) instead of fatter, lazier and less employable, they'd be at least educated to some extent and trained for a real job--one that is better than finding their way to the unemployment office. Best line of the night: Gary Johnson's about his neighbor's dog having more shovel ready projects than Obama.
BOTTOM LINE: THESE DEBATES ARE OFTEN DUMB, BUT THEY DO SORT THE "WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF"
If Perry continues to poll well, it will only confirm that many Americans aren't paying attention. How else could Obama have been elected?
IS THE STOCK MARKET COMING TO ITS SENSES--FACING REALITY?
For months, many of us have been asking how the stock market could be doing so well when the economy was doing so poorly. Now it isn't. Neither one is. Even though Bernanke is "creating" another half trillion dollars to dump into the economy, consumers, in fact all Americans know better. They understand that things are not going to get better--certainly not a lot better--for a long time. In the unfortunate event that Obama were reelected, maybe never! Or at least not for 5 more years. Here's a growth plan/jobs plan for America--"Replace Obama." Now don't jump to conclusions. That's not enough—but it's a good start. Then hold the House and take the Senate. But that's not enough either, because politicians need constant reminders about who they work for and what they are supposed to do. Otherwise, they all fall back into the same stupid behaviors.
MITT ROMNEY IS CLEARLY THE CLASS OF THE GOP--AND A "CLASS ACT" AS WELL
It's time to quit analyzing and start getting behind the right person. I still like Herman Cain's down to earth, gutsy, common sense. (BULLETIN: Cain handily won the Florida "GOP Straw Poll" beating Perry badly. Perry had really worked to win it--no deal. Romney came in third.) I like Newt's policy brilliance too (Can he stay on message? Not usually.) Jon Huntsman knows a lot of the right stuff--but he is somehow so "detached" from it all. Rick Perry was not ready for prime time--that is clear now. I don't know if the gets a "do-over" or not. Michelle Bachman is better in the House than on the campaign trail. Ron Paul's voice IS being heard--and that's all he really wants. Some of his ideas are good--some are goofy. Rick Santorum seems to be running for VP or Secretary of State. It's time to start sorting and picking.
Barack Obama intends to spend ONE BILLION DOLLARS trying to get reelected. We know he's willing to LIE, CHEAT AND DO WHATEVER IT TAKES! Obviously he was trained by the best in the crooked politics business--the CHICAGO political machine and his mentors, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, etc.
My choices, thus far, remain the same as have been evolving for several months: Romney-Rubio or Romney-Cain. These leaders can turn around America. (But it will take some time--it took several years to get it this screwed up, so it will take several years--and a Congress that is supportive, to get it fixed.
THE ATTACHED EDITORIAL SUMS UP VERY WELL ONE OF BARACK OBAMA'S BIGGEST FLAWS--HIS DISTORTED SENSE OF FAIRNESS
MEANWHILE--IF YOU LIVE IN OHIO--HEADS UP--A HUGE ELECTION IS COMING THIS NOVEMBER
The public employee unions plan to spend upwards of $20 million in hopes of overturning SB-5. If you don't know what that is, watch THE ENTERPRISE and I'll tell you lots more. If you do know what it is, I hope you will tell everyone you know to beware of the MISINFORMATION coming their way from supporters of Police, Firefighters and Teachers Unions. The only thing wrong with SB-5 is that it attempted to reverse 20n years of bad practices all in one stroke. It would probably have been better to do it with 2-3 smaller laws. But now, it is law, until or unless the referendum forces its repeal. The OHIO budget is balances, and amazingly, the state seems to be working just fine. Some companies are actually moving jobs here! Stay tuned for more on this topic.
Best, JOHN

DO YOU HAVE A CZAR THAT REPRESENTS YOU? I DON'T!
The title of "Czar" is one that has (as far as I know) no legitimate role in American government. However, it has grown to indicate a person in whom the president informally confers part of his power. I have no idea if this list is complete, correct, or a total fabrication. (I doubt it is any of the three!) It does, however indicate the extent to which the current president attempts to extend his reach into every aspect of American lives! He truly believes that he and his government knows best in all matters.Perhaps that is why he cannot even consider advice or decisions from anyone but his designated acolytes.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2011
The 2013 Tax Cliff
Business had better enjoy the next 16 months.
President Obama unveiled part two of his American Jobs Act on Monday, and it turns out to be another permanent increase in taxes to pay for more spending and another temporary tax cut. No surprise there. What might surprise Americans, however, is how the President is setting up the U.S. economy for one of the biggest tax increases in history in 2013.
Mr. Obama said last week that he wants $240 billion in new tax incentives for workers and small business, but the catch is that all of these tax breaks would expire at the end of next year. To pay for all this, White House budget director Jack Lew also proposed $467 billion in new taxes that would begin a mere 16 months from now. The tax list includes limiting deductions for those earning more than $200,000 ($250,000 for couples), limiting tax breaks for oil and gas companies, and a tax increase on carried interest earned by private equity firms. These tax increases would not be temporary.
What this means is that millions of small-business owners had better enjoy the next 16 months, because come January 2013 they are going to get hit with a giant tax bill. Let's call the expensive roll:
• First comes the new tax hikes that Mr. Obama proposed on Monday. Capping itemized deductions and exemptions for the rich would take $405 billion from the private economy for 10 years starting in 2013. Taxing carried interest would raise $18 billion, and repealing tax incentives for oil and gas production would get $41 billion.
• These increases would coincide with the expiration of the tax credits, 100% expensing provisions and payroll tax breaks in Mr. Obama's new jobs program. This would mean a tax hit of $240 billion on small business and workers. That's the downside of temporary tax breaks and other job-creation gimmicks: The incentives quickly vanish, and perhaps so do the jobs.
So even if the White House is right that its latest stimulus plan will create "millions of jobs" through 2012, by this logic a $240 billion tax hike on small businesses in 2013 would cost the economy jobs. This tax wallop would arrive when even the White House says the unemployment rate will still be 7.4%.
• January 2013 is also the same month that Mr. Obama wants the
Bush-era tax rates to expire on Americans earning more than $200,000. That would raise the highest individual income tax rate to about 42%, including deduction phase-out’s, from 35% today. Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation found in 2009 that $437 billion of business income would be taxed at higher tax rates under the Obama plan. And since some 4.5 million small-business owners file their annual tax returns as subchapter S firms under the individual tax code, this tax increase would often apply to the same people who Mr. Obama is targeting with his new tax credits.
The capital gains and dividend taxes would also rise to an expected 20% rate from 15% today. The 10-year hit to the private economy for all of these expiring Bush rates: about $750 billion.
• Also starting in 2013 are two of ObamaCare's biggest tax increases: an additional 0.9-percentage point levy on top of the 2.9% Medicare tax for those earning more than $200,000, and a new 2.9% surcharge on investment income, including interest income. This will further increase the top tax rate on capital gains and dividends to 23.8%, for a roughly 60% increase in investment taxes in one year.
The White House's economic logic seems to be that its new spending and temporary tax cuts will so fire up investment and hiring in the next 16 months that the economy will be growing much faster in 2013 and could thus absorb a leap off the tax cliff. But this requires its own leap of faith.
The White House also predicted a similar economic takeoff from the 2009 stimulus that was supposed to make a tax hike possible in 2011. Then last December Mr. Obama proposed new tax incentives only for 2011 because the economy was supposed to be cooking by 2012. Now it wants to extend those tax breaks so the economy will be cruising in 2013.
All of this assumes that American business owners aren't smart enough to look beyond the next few months. They can surely see the new burdens they'll face in 2013, and they aren't about to load up on new employees or take new large risks if they aren't sure what their costs will be in 16 months. They can also reasonably wonder whether Mr. Obama's tax hike will hurt the overall economy in 2013—another reason to be cautious now.
For the White House, the policy calendar is dictated above all by the political necessities of the 2012 election. Mr. Obama will take his chances on 2013 if he can cajole the private economy to create enough new jobs over the next year to win re-election, even if those jobs and growth are temporary. Business owners and workers who would prefer to prosper beyond Election Day aren't likely to share Mr. Obama's enthusiasm once they see the great tax cliff approaching. Look out below.

HOW DOES THIS STRIKE YOU? MAKE SENSE--OR NOT?
You may have seen this before. When the number of Americans who do not pay income taxes exceed the ones who do, we seem to be approaching this condition. Ours is a nation on the verge of a "breakdown," largely due to the leadership failures, and misdeeds of our elected officials--and I am not just talking about Barack Obama.
DEATH OF A DEMOCRACY "Currently...The people who are getting the free stuff don't like the people who are paying for the free stuff, because the people who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff. Therefore, the people who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, while the the people who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!
In the meantime, the people who are forcing some people to PAY for the free stuff are telling the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff are being mean, prejudiced, and racist. That's right---the people who are GETTING the free stuff are being told they need to HATE the people who are paying for the free stuff by the same people who are forcing some people to pay for other people's free stuff in the first place!
FACT: ALL great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason? .... the voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the Treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the Treasury in exchange for electing them.
The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 231 years ago. Today, the number of people getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff!
Folks, we have one chance to change this in 2012. Failure to do so spells the end of the United States as we know it.
ELECTION 2012 IS COMING .... Let’s Take a Stand!!!
Here are some proposed parts of such a stand:
Obama: Gone! Borders: Closed! Language: English (only) Culture: Follow the Constitution and the Bill of Rights! Drug Free: Mandatory Drug Screening before Welfare! NO freebies to: Non-Citizens!"
IS THIS WISHFUL THINKING? OR RIGHT ON?
Many have asked me who I think is the best candidate for the Republican nomination for President. Since the election is still over a year away, I am still pondering that. But my choices remain MItt Romney and Rick Perry...and roughly in that order...until I learn more about Perry.
The Ticket Obama Fears Most
ByBruce Walker, Published in the American Thinker.
The talking heads on Fox News Special Report this Friday concurred that Marco Rubio will be on the Republican ticket next year as the vice presidential nominee. I agree. There is virtually no downside to Rubio and the advantages to the ticket are prohibitive. He is youthful, attractive, and articulate. Rubio won a tough three-way race in Florida last year. His life story is compelling as the child of Cuban parents who worked up the hard and legal way. His conservatism on social and economic issues is unwavering. Rubio is slightly too young and inexperienced to run as president, but eight years as vice president would make him ideal presidential timber.
If Senator Rubio becomes the running mate of Governor Perry, which I believe is increasingly likely, President Obama could face his worst electoral nightmare. At the outset, both men are excellent campaigners -- articulate, likeable, attractive, and accustomed to winning elections in the diverse and large populations of Texas and Florida. Unlike Republican nominees since Reagan, Rick Perry knows how to work crowds. Perry, like Rubio, has never lost a political race. Although it is a relatively small section of his resume, his time successfully selling Bible reference books door-to-door may be as important as background in running for president.
Both Perry and Rubio have life stories which demonstrate that the American Dream really works. Perry grew up on a cotton tenant farm in the middle of nowhere and worked hard up every step in his path to success. Rubio's parents worked in menial jobs so that their son could have a better life. Imagine Rubio campaigning in Las Vegas, where his parents worked like so many Hispanics today, cleaning rooms and tending bars. The greatest impact of these life stories is that the Republican ticket could say just how poor people need not stay poor if government gets out of the way.
Perry and Rubio are both social and economic conservatives. The left tries to downplay the appeal of social conservatism, but to take just a single social conservative issue, abortion, the latest Rasmussen Poll shows that 55% of Americans believe that abortion is morally wrong while only 30% believe that abortion is morally acceptable and 41% of Americans believe that it is too easy to get an abortion in America while only 14% believe that it is too hard to get an abortion. The vanilla question about whether Americans are "pro-choice" or "pro-life" is meaningless, if Republican candidates have the gumption to ask Obama in a debate whether he believes abortion is moral or immoral -- leaving the question of federal policy on abortion aside.
This particular ticket would also have profound appeal to Hispanic voters, whose support for Obama has dropped a dramatic 36 points since he took office. The impact of Rubio on the ticket, of course, is obvious: he would be the first Hispanic on a major party ticket in American history. Big chunks of Hispanic voters in 2008 voted for Obama because he was a "person of color." Reelecting a black man president has much less psychological value to Hispanic voters than electing a Hispanic who could easily be president in eight years.
The impact of Rick Perry is real, but underestimated by Beltway punditry, which listens more to high ranking Hispanic organizational leaders rather than ordinary Hispanics. Perry has won many statewide elections in Texas, including three as governor. Almost40% of the state is Hispanic. Governor Perry speaks Spanish, but more than that, just as a New York City or Chicago politicians grasp the nuances of European ethnic differences, so Perry understands the largely Mexican-American minority and hassteadily improved his percentage of the Hispanic vote in Texas elections.
A politically savvy Perry with the first Hispanic on a national ticket as his running mate could disarm the traditional skittishness that some Hispanics have had about voting Republican. Combine that with the very real success that Perry has had in creating jobs in Texas -- compared with Obama nationally or California Democrats -- and he could make a strong argument that Perry-Rubio is precisely what most Hispanics really want in Washington.
This could be complemented by the rise of Hispanic Republicans in 2010. Susana Martinez, the conservative Republican governor of New Mexico, next door to Texas, is a prime example. The first female Hispanic governor in American history could travel throughout the Rocky Mountain region touting a Perry-Rubio ticket. It is not just Hispanic "people of color" that could connect with Hispanics. Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley, both articulate and strongly Republican governors could both show the legal immigrants from lands as distant as India are welcomed by conservatives.
Black voters will go overwhelmingly for Obama, but black voters vote overwhelmingly for Democrats no matter what Republicans have tried. If Hispanic voters, already accustomed to conservative Republicans senators and governors, vote in substantial numbers for conservative Republicans at the national level, then not only is Obama in trouble, but so is his party. That is why Perry-Rubio could be the ticket Democrats fear most.

WHERE HAVE THEY GONE? VICTIMS OF THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN? FLED THE COUNTRY (OR THEIR MONEY HAS?)
Reminds me of the famous line from Atlas Shrugged "Where is John Galt?"
Millionaires Go Missing
"In 2007, 390,000 tax filers reported adjusted gross income of $1 million or more and paid $309 billion in taxes. In 2009, there were only 237,000 such filers, a decline of 39 percent. Almost four of 10 millionaires vanished in two years, and the total taxes they paid in 2009 declined to $178 billion, a drop of 42 percent, says the Wall Street Journal.
Those with $10 million or more in reported income fell to 8,274 from 18,394 in 2007, a 55 percent drop. As a result, their tax payments tanked by 51 percent. These disappearing millionaires go a long way toward explaining why federal tax revenues have sunk to 15 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in recent years.
The loss of millionaires accounts for at least $130 billion of the higher federal budget deficit in 2009.
But the millionaires who are left still pay a mountain of tax.
Those who make $1 million accounted for about 0.2 percent of all tax returns but paid 20.4 percent of income taxes in 2009. Those with adjusted gross income above $200,000 a year were just under 3 percent of tax filers but paid 50.1 percent of the $866 billion in total personal income taxes. Before the recession, the $200,000 income group paid 54.5 percent of the income tax.
This means the top 3 percent paid more than the bottom 97 percent, yet the 3 percent are the people that President Obama claims don't pay their fair share."

I DON'T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS, SO, LIKE MANY OF YOU, I AM STILL SEARCHING
Please feel free to weigh in on what your "take" is on the many things going on, and how our country in crisis is going to pull through it....or not.
Fall is just around the corner, so enjoy it.

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. —Ronald Reagan

OF THE TRAGEDY OF 9/11, AND OF THE BIRTH OF THE ENTERPRISE!
This will be a very short edition, so everyone can focus on what we learned from the tragic events of 9/11. It's all over the major news media. I hope one conclusion will be that as a nation united, we are incredibly powerful and with great potential, and as a nation divided, we are not.
The past ten years have marked the era when I started writing THE ENTERPRISE, as a direct email to a group of friends and contacts who kept asking me, "what do you think will happen now?" Here it is 10 years and about 500 editions later and I am still wondering what the answer to that question should be. Thus I will keep searching and sharing my findings with you all...the list has grown from the initial 35 to somewhere between 600-700 depending on drops and adds. From what some of you tell me, it reaches far more than that when forwarded and share with your contacts and friends. That is great. The more the merrier.
After this weekend, one of the major worries in Columbus, OH is whither the Buckeyes. With 5 stars suspended in the tattoo episode and 3 more out due to a charity event NCAA misbehavior, the Bucks are playing without 6 planned starters--the top running back, receiver, offensive lineman, and two defensive backfield starters--and that doesn't count Terrelle Pryor's departure. This past weekend, Toledo was a handful, and we don't know if they are that good, or we are that bad. Add to that the astounding end of the Notre Dame-Michigan game in which 3 TDs were scored in the last minute and a half, including two my Michigan to win, and Buckeye country is sober on this 9/11. You understand that in the Buckeye Nation, "Football isn't a matter of life or death around here--it's much more important than that."

THIS WEEK MARKS THE END OF SUMMER (PRACTICALLY), KIDS ARE BACK TO SCHOOL AND CONGRESS IS HEADING BACK INTO SESSION
This is my last chance to pass on an assortment of articles, posts and messages that are too good to leave in the "save" pile.
COULD THIS BE A GLIMMER OF PROGRESS? IT SURE IS THE "RIGHT DIRECTION" FOR A CHANGE--(BUT FAR FROM ENOUGH)

"Obama Halts EPA's Proposed Ozone Rule: President Barack Obama, citing the nation's struggling economy, asked the Environmental Protection Agency to withdraw an air quality rule that Republicans and business groups have said could cost tens of billions of dollars a year or more and kill thousands of jobs."
THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE HAS TO FACE DOWN THE PRESIDENT--HOW SAD, HOW BAD
If Barack Obama's weakness hasn't been exposed by his past two+ years of mis-deeds, it was showcased this week. In one of his typical thoughtless moves, Obama (or his inept staff) scheduled his BIG Speech to the Congress on a day that presented two problems. First, it conflicted with a long-advance scheduled GOP Presidential Debate. That makes his scheduling seem like an "in your face" insult (he's done this sort of purposeful conflict before); second, they didn't think--or plan--to involve the Speaker of the House until the very last minute. The House is just back from recess that day and had assorted business scheduled, (but nothing all that important I bet) BUT--there was not enough time to do the "security sweep" the entire Capitol and chamber. Or at least that is what John Boehner said in his terse letter to Obama telling him that the House would be glad to hear him speak--one night later than Obama had planned on!
What an affront to a sitting President! And a self-inflicted wound due to foolish scheduling. FYI--NBC, who is sponsoring the GOP Debate was considering doing a "split screen" simulcast of both events, if the President wouldn't change his date. As it is, Obama has go compete with the opening game of the NFL. Hmmm. Weak? Yep! To read more about President Obama's failings, see the next item.

It was picked up by Yahoo and ran all over the place resulting in lots of comments--including many that were decidedly "not nice" ones at all.
FROM THE NYTIMES: Economy Showed Zero Job Growth in August; Unemployment Rate at 9.1%
"The economy showed no job growth in August, the first time there has been no job growth in the United States in a year. The net addition of no jobs in the month was down sharply from a revised 85,000 gain of jobs in July, the Labor Department said Friday, and was far below a consensus forecast by economists of 60,000. The unemployment rate stayed constant at 9.1 percent in August. The non-farm payrolls stayed flat in August after a prolonged increase in economic anxiety that began with the brinksmanship in the debt-ceiling debate and was followed by the country’s loss of its triple-A credit rating, stock market whiplash and renewed concerns about Europe’s sovereign debt. And the jobs figure, a monthly statistical snapshot by the Department of Labor, appear more negative than they actually are because they do not include 45,000 Verizon workers who were on strike when the survey was taken."
OBAMA'S MINIONS BYPASS CONGRESS TO KILL JOBS---AND RESTRICT FREEDOM IN AMERICA
Remember the "Card Check" law, the Employee Free Choice Act, that was rejected by Congress last year. Well, think again. Barack Obama is proving what I have said for a long time. His "minions" appointed to agency seats and Cabinet posts are killing jobs faster than he can try to create them. If it's not the EPA, or the CPSC, or the EEOC, et. al., it's the National Labor Relations Board, stacked by Obama with intensely pro-union members, helping Unions kill jobs. Read all about it--and weep.
The debt ceiling debate was a debacle, largely due to two mistakes that added up to a big mistake. First, the newly elected Tea Party conservatives showed a concerning lack of pragmatism by being totally inflexible--and thus thwarting Speaker Boehner's attempt to get a "big deal" in spending cuts. It would have taken some minor concessions on revenue increases (tax increases--yes, that's a bad idea--but not if you get enough in return for them). Then there was the absence of leadership by the President, replaced instead by petulance, frustration and weak behavior--always blaming someone else. He walked into the negotiations with Boehner and tried to "up the ante" in tax cuts--after a deal was agreed to--because he couldn't sell his deal to his Democratic liberal base either.
That sounds to me like a good compromise: neither side likes it much, but both agree that it is the right thing to do--in general. That "grand bargain" deal would have included $4 Trillion in spending cuts for $800 Billion in revenue increases--both over a 10 year time frame. Much better than the compromise deal reached finally, and one that probably would have left S. & P. without a good reason for a credit downgrade.
REVISITING SOME OLD POLICIES IS IN ORDER
--Trade: Free trade is not fair trade if one of the trading partners cheats. That is what tariffs & duties, and trade policies were created to avert. It is time to "reset" the level of US duties and tariffs in order to protect a select group of industries that are critical to our success as a nation. China is the biggest offender, but there are many more. Japan used our policies to build its auto industry. Many smaller nations cheat all the time. Our creation and granting of Most Favored Nation trade status needs a total overhaul. If we do this, we will send a message loud and clear. We want to trade with other countries who are fine with a "level playing field." No less.
--Taxes: The tax system needs a total restructuring. There are way too many subsidies and loopholes obtained by well-connected and well-heeled lobbyists. They need to be cleaned out, and cleaned up. That will increase tax revenue--and much of it will come from companies--but they will just pass it on in pricing of their goods and services (unless there is no rational way for them to do it, and then they will "eat it" and pay their fair share of taxes. Then lower rates on taxpayers, and simplify the structure. Insist that everyone pay some taxes--even if it is only $20, and let them apply to recover it if they qualify for or already participate in one of more of the multitude of government funded programs already in place (Food Stamps, School Lunch programs, housing allowances, etc. etc.)
--Unions: Under Obama's NLRB, they are growing in power at just the time that they are growing more useless and predatory. It is time for a National Right To Work Law, which can only happen if the GOP gains control of the Senate, holds onto the House and wins the White House. Maybe those are long odds, but this is the best chance to take a big swing at unions and their power-plays.
WHO WILL SAVE AMERICA? LEADERSHIP IS ESSENTIAL...
We have now seen, time and again, that Barack Obama is ineffective as a leader. His supporters scream profanities at me when I blog that, but it's true. The rest of the world either laughs at him or simply shakes their head in puzzlement. Americans are figuring it out, as more and more see his incompetence in the condition of our country and economy. I have been waiting and listening before finally choosing who I think is the best 2012 GOP Presidential candidate. There are a couple of GOP debates coming--Sept. 7 and Sept. 22--and those could change my mind. Right now, my choices are close calls--see below.
HERE IS WHERE I AM RIGHT NOW
Most of the "candidates" are "also rans" who have tiny chances of being nominated: Gingrich, Paul, Santorum, Cain, and Huntsman, etc. are barely moving the needle in polls.
Perry and Bachman are going to hammer each other, while they both try to hammer Mitt Romney. But they both may be "too conservative" to beat Obama. To win the White House in 2012 takes a "moderate"--someone that the full range of Republicans can get behind--even the Tea Partiers, AND someone that Independents will choose over Obama. (Jon Huntsman is too little, too late.)
So, right now, that someone is Mitt Romney. He's been down this road before. He may be less colorful than Perry or Bachman (or even Palin if she foolishly jumps in)--but Mitt may be the guy most Americans will (compromise on and) choose to put the country back together. He did it on a smaller scale during the troubled Salt Lake City Olympics--and believe me--Olympic politics are enormous and diverse.
But before I go on, there is a video you need to watch--and note that the speaker has no teleprompters and few visible notes. Here is an up and comer! Just needs experience and seasoning--Marco Rubio, young Senator from FL
Watch and listen to this. It's kind of long, but it's worth it--and when you are done, you will say, "Wow! That guy's good!"
DID YOU GUESS MY EARLY PICKS: AT THIS POINT--(and there is a long time before the election)
I THINK A ROMNEY-RUBIO TICKET COULD BE THE BEST POSITIONED TO BEAT BARACK OBAMA--AND ALSO TO FIX AMERICA.
BUT--and there is always a "but," IF Perry moderates his positions a bit, he could be a winner too. I have not seen or heard enough of him directly to form an opinion on him compared to Romney, who I liked all the way back in 2008. IF Perry comes up the winner, then his VP pick might not be Rubio (too much conservatism on the ticket). Then Ohio's Rob Portman might be a great VP choice. He's a calm, cool, and experienced moderate, former Bush Budget Director and former International Trade Rep under Bush, and a six-term Congressman from OH before that.
SO THERE'S MY CLOSE SECOND CHOICE: A PERRY-PORTMAN TICKET, AND THOSE TWO WOULD ALSO HAVE THE CREDENTIALS TO FIX AMERICA.
You read about those two "tickets" here. BOTH ARE BETTER THAN OBAMA-BIDEN!
