Most of you already know my cell phone number and for those who don't can email me and I'll send it to you.  The number of hangups and robo-calls on the "office line" was becoming intolerable, plus the number of important calls had dropped a lot (due to people using my cell phone).

I USED TO WRITE ABOUT BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT TOPICS IN HERE

These days, everything in business is so deeply tangled up with government that it's hard to separate the two. Sure, it is essential to serve customers, offer good value, be cost competitive, and earn a return on invested capital.  It's just that doing these things with the "millstone" of government around the neck of business gets harder and harder.  These are still the cornerstones of business success:  Quality, Service, Cost Competitiveness, Innovation, and People--the best people working with the best Partners…  Don't ever lose sight of these essentials.

WOULDN'T IT BE NICE TO HAVE A PRESIDENT WHO ALSO UNDERSTOOD THOSE ESSENTIALS OF ECONOMIC SUCCESS?

First a report on Mitt Romney:  I went to see him when he was in Columbus this week.  Several things struck me.  (I am more supportive than ever. He is the right man for the times for America.)  He spoke to a group of students, faculty and the general public at Otterbein University.  It was an auditorium full of people and a far cry of the "pep rallies" Barack Obama holds.  The first half of Romney's talk was more like a "classroom lecture" on the principles of free enterprise and the economy.  I'm sure that I enjoyed it more than some in the audience--because it as a bit "dry." 

A MAN ON A MISSION, WITH PASSION AND ZEAL--AND IT SHOWED WHEN YOU ARE UP CLOSE

However, when Romney got the second half, his character, his determination and his passion (his understated way of showing it was evident from my seat only 30 feet from him) were evident.  I am constantly amazed at how candidates, and especially presidential candidates "hold up" under the rigors of the campaign trail.  It has to be grueling.  Romney is clearly a "man on a mission" to "save America," and help it regain its former glory and prosperity.  The line I recall most vividly is when he said (paraphrasing) "that I am committed to the depth of my soul to help America regain its greatness…." or something like that.  Word like "soul" are not a normal part of a campaign speech unless it is coming from a person's heart--and soul.  I saw no teleprompters and he appeared to speak without any notes that I could see, either.  

Mitt Romney is "for real."  He doesn't need the money or the power, and he's plenty famous already.  He wants to lead us so we can "fix" America--that's it.

A LITTLE BIT OF INFO I RECEIVED FROM THE ROMNEY CAMPAIGN

This sort of shows what Barack Obama thinks his priorities are:

There are a lot of numbers on the rise under President Obama: government spending, home foreclosures, gas prices, and national debt.Another figure ticked upward this last week: holes golfed by President Obama.   Between his "official" and "nonpolitical" visits to swing states, the President found time to play another 18 holes this weekend. As millions of Americans continue to struggle to find work, President Obama has now played a total of 1,710 holes since taking office. That's 95 rounds of golf.  A lot of Americans have had to make sacrifices these last four years. We would expect our President to do the same.  It would sure be nice to give him even more time--a permanent "golf vacation" out of the White House.

THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN NOW AND 1980 ARE AMAZING

The weekend WSJ article "Fits and Starts" charted past recoveries and compared them to this one.  In Real GDP, Total Nonfarm Jobs, Private Industry Jobs, and even Government Jobs, the two recoveries were more similar and closer to the same than any of the others 1975, 1991, 2001.

The other similarity, if you are into these "coincidences" is that a failed president is up for reelection (Carter and Obama), his opponent came from a background quite different than most political candidates, having been involved in business (movies and private equity), having been a Republican governor elected in a largely Democratic state (CA and MA), the aspiring presidential candidate had lost out on the nomination 4 years ago, and his last name started with R and had six letters.  (Fill it in yourself R - - - - - .  (And both of these men had "good hair!"(:-)

AROUND THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD--MESSES ARE PILING UP

Spain and Greece--riots in the streets over exactly the kind of dilemma the US is facing if someone doesn't take drastic remedial action

Scandals keep popping up:  first there was Solyndra, et. al., and Fast & Furious, and the GSA partying and spending spree, and the Secret Service prostitution misadventures, and…  

Threatening the Supreme Court while they are deliberating on Obamacare (and next the Arizona immigration lawsuits)

Are all of these the fault of Barack Obama?  NO.  But most of them are directly traceable back to his errors in leadership and decisions.  The others are just reflective of a wave of permissive misbehavior running rampant. (Recall the "Occupy" movement which Obama supported?) 

The president using the "Chicken Little--the sky is falling" approach, claiming a Darwinian plot and every form of scary outcome--using this demagoguery to disrespect the first realistic budget proposal during his term of office (Although he's submitted two--that were resoundingly defeated by even his own party in the Senate--they don't count.  NO BUDGET since he was elected.  Spending $1.40 for every $1.00 of revenue, to run up deficits in the $1.25--$1.3 Trillion range--a total of $5 Trillion in 4 years!!!!

IF YOU THINK YOU CAN TRUST BARACK OBAMA TO RUN YOUR COUNTRY--WATCH AND LISTEN TO THIS:  "THE PIGFORD CASE"

This just shows how he thinks, and what he's doing to America--and it is only a small instance--but it is symbolically important.

CONTRAST THIS TO MITT ROMNEY--A STORY YOU HAVE LIKELY ALREADY READ...

Sometimes, this facet of Romney’s personality isn’t so subtle. In July 1996, the 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner at Bain Capital, had disappeared. She had attended a rave party in New York City and gotten high on ecstasy.  Three days later, her distraught father had no idea where she was. 

Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to help find Gay’s daughter. Romney set up a command center at the LaGuardia Marriott and hired a private detective firm to assist with the search. He established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the NYPD, and went through his Rolodex and called everyone Bain did business with in New York, and asked them to help find his friend’s missing daughter. Romney’s accountants at Price Waterhouse Cooper put up posters on street poles, while cashiers at a pharmacy owned by Bain put fliers in the bag of every shopper. Romney and the other Bain employees scoured every part of New York and talked with everyone they could – prostitutes, drug addicts – anyone.

That day, their hunt made the evening news, which featured photos of the girl and the Bain employees searching for her. As a result, a teenage boy phoned in, asked if there was a reward, and then hung up abruptly. The NYPD traced the call to a home in New Jersey, where they found the girl in the basement, shivering and experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a massive ecstasy dose. Doctors later said the girl might not have survived another day. Romney’s former partner credits Mitt Romney with saving his daughter’s life, saying, “It was the most amazing thing, and I’ll never forget this to the day I die.

So, here’s my epiphany: Mitt Romney simply can’t help himself. He sees a problem, and his mind immediately sets to work solving it, sometimes consciously, and sometimes not-so-consciously. He doesn’t do it for self-aggrandizement, or for personal gain. He does it because that’s just how he’s wired.

Many people are unaware of the fact that when Romney was asked by his old employer, Bill Bain, to come back to Bain & Company as CEO to rescue the firm from bankruptcy, Romney left Bain Capital to work at Bain & Company for an annual salary of one dollar. 

When Romney went to the rescue of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, he accepted no salary for three years, and wouldn’t use an expense account. He also accepted no salary as Governor of Massachusetts.

Character counts!! (and yes...that's worth reading again!)  But it does help if you've been successful enough to be "self-funding!"

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

Mitt Romney simply wants to restore America to its former greatness--and fix the ills that have befallen it--from Obama and predecessors' mistakes.  He doesn't need to do this; he doesn't need the money; he doesn't even need the power of the Presidency.  It's a huge headache.  Why would anyone want it if they were already wealthy, powerful and comfortable?  Because of character and patriotism?  Old-fashioned?  Maybe.  Noble?  Probably.  Passionate?  Definitely!  I saw it with my own eyes.

SPREAD THE WORD--SHARE THIS WITH AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE.  I WILL KEEP THEM COMING UNTIL WE SEE A REAL TURNAROUND IN AMERICA--AND THAT WILL START THE DAY BARACK OBAMA LEAVES THE WHITE HOUSE.  YOU READ IT HERE.

THE ENTERPRISE--THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING THE RIGHT PEOPLE

 

YOU ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PEOPLE YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH (A Chapter topic in HOPE IS NOT A STRATEGY)

Nothing is more important in business (or government) than choosing well and surrounding yourself with the right people, the best talent and the skills needed.  There is another factor, however.  Those people also have to reflect your way of thinking, of operating and your basic philosophies.  Too many companies choose people poorly, fail to get and use competent professional support (there is a lot of it out there).  

The NIH (Not Invented Here) factor is powerful, and many people think they are good at interviewing and choosing talent, when, in fact, few people are good at this.  The hiring manager or executive may be good at "selling the job, or the company" to an applicant.  That is far different from assessing the applicant's suitability for the need.  This brings us to another mistake in hiring.

An early mistake companies make is that they fail to adequately define what they need, and what they should be looking for.  Too many fall back on "canned" job descriptions because they are too lazy (or not insightful enough) to fully define what kind of person, talent, experience, background and skill-sets they want to find.  Some people don't hire the best because they are insecure and fearful of being "outshined" by their new hire(s).  How sad that is--but it happens, more than is admitted!

The next big mistake is that they underestimate the importance of "culture fit."  Few things are more dominant than a culture match when choosing people--or partners--in business (and in government, and in life).  Qualifications are important, make no mistake about that.  Experience is valuable.  But put a bad culture fit into and executive job, or as a key supplier, and everything stops working right.  

The next challenge is to define the level and nature of leadership they expect in the people they hire.  (E. g., Is it a highly collaborative and open culture, or is it a more directive and controlled culture?)  This decision defines the kind of people that will "fit," and the kind of leadership in place.

Is the current culture and leadership honest, truthful, open and sharing?  If not, why not? This is critically important to understand.  Good leaders must "walk their talk" showing their leadership to the people.  That means they say what they plan to do and do what they said they would (unless circumstances change, in which they explain that fact).  When leaders lie, or distort the facts to make them fit their needs--people notice--and those people closest to the matter, notice most.  This can be glossed over in an interview process, but will be exposed soon after a person comes on board--and likely leaves because they were "misled" or "lied to."

WONDER WHY THE SECRET SERVICE MIGHT HAVE LOW RESPECT FOR HOW ITS BEHAVIOR REFLECTS ON THE PRESIDENT?

NOW CONSIDER THE PAST WEEK'S REVELATIONS ABOUT THE SECRET SERVICE SCANDAL AND ASK:  ARE THESE LEADERSHIP RELATED ISSUES?

• When a weak leader surrounds himself with "yes men" they will help amplify all of his errors. (Check)
• When a misguided leader thinks he is smarter than the people he has hired, he won't listen to them; he'll just give them orders. (Check)
• When an insecure leader actually picks someone who is experienced but disagrees with him--'color him gone.'  (Bill Daley as Chief of Staff)
• When a failed leader is pressed by anyone about his failures he attacks them--interviewers or opponents. (Check)
• When an inexperienced leader doesn't know what to do he "throws money at problems," wasting it. (Check)
• When a leader who is lacking in character, honesty, etc. shows it to the people around him, they start to think that behavior is OK. (Check)
• When an inept leader fails he first tries to redefine the goals to make failure seem like success. (Check)
• When an inept leader fails he tries to shift the blame, complains or whines about others (like the GOP House). (Check)

FAST & FURIOUS, KEYSTONE PIPELINE, GSA SPENDING SCANDAL, SECRET SERVICE PROSTITUTION SCANDAL, & (THE "VERY UNDIGNIFIED" FIRST LADY MAKING THE ROUNDS OF THE TALK SHOWS)

Is this a President we can be proud of?  Is this a leader we can admire and follow?  Or is this a desperate failure trying anything and everything to convince the easily misled, that he is on their side. (Maybe he is!)

MITT IS JUST BEGINNING TO REVEAL SOME CONCEPTS:

Smaller government mentioned in a recent speech, start by eliminating the Dept. of Education (that does nothing but spend a lot and meddle with "education") and Health & Human Services (the home of all the most extensive welfare spending imaginable)

That's why the merger or acquisition was done.  I've heard lies like we are in great financial condition--less than a month before the (liar's) company filed for Ch. 11 and stuck us for hundreds of thousands of unpaid bills.  Union organizers lie all the time, about what they can do and what will happen if a plant is unionized.  But the deadliest, most devastating lie of all is that of the leader--because it both completely eliminates any trust in that leader, and reveals a deep, profound character flaw--a lack of integrity.  When leaders lie--as the President of the US continues to do--nothing good will come of it.  Some of his lies are being exposed, other get by without detection, until the trouble starts.

As we think about electing a president in just 7 months, it might be instructive to hear what some of the people closest to pass presidents think about them and their First Ladies.

*Here are snippets from "In The President's Secret Service: Behind The Scenes With Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect” by Robert Kessler, a book of "Impressions & Observations" of Secret Service personnel assigned to guard U.S. Presidents/First Ladies, and Vice Presidents.*  The accuracy of the author’s quotes is "Undetermined" at best (worst) by Snopes. 

JOHN & JACQUELINE KENNEDY: 
*A philanderer of the highest order.*
*She ordered the kitchen help to save all the left-over wine during State dinner, which mixed with fresh wine and served again during the next White House occasion.*

LYNDON & LADYBIRD JOHNSON: 
*Another philanderer of the highest order.  In addition, LBJ was as crude as the day is long.*
*Both JFK and LBJ kept a lot of women in the White House for extramarital affairs, and both had set up "early warning systems" to alert them if/when their wives were nearby. Both Kennedy & Johnson were promiscuous and oversexed men.*
*She was either naive or just pretended to "not know" about her husband's many liaisons.*

RICHARD & PAT NIXON: 
*A "moral" man but very odd and weird, paranoid, etc. He had a horrible relationship with his family, and in a way, was almost a recluse.*
*She was quiet most of the time.*

SPIRO AGNEW:
*Nice, decent man, everyone in the Secret Service was surprised about his downfall.*

GERALD & BETTY FORD:
*A true gentlemen who treated the Secret Service with respect and dignity. He had a great sense of humor. *
*She drank a lot!*

JIMMY & ROSALYN CARTER: 
*A complete phony who would portray one picture of himself to public and very different in private, eg., would be shown carrying his own luggage, but the suit cases were always empty; he kept empty ones just for photo op's. Wanted the people to see him as pious and a non-drinker, but he and his family drank alcohol a lot. He had disdain for the Secret Service, and was very irresponsible with the "football" nuclear codes. He didn't think it was a big deal and would keep military aides at a great distance. Often does not acknowledge the presence of Secret Service personnel assigned to serve him.*
*She mostly did her own thing.*

RONALD & NANCY REAGAN:
*The real deal --- moral, honest, respectful, and dignified. They treated Secret Service and everyone else with respect and honor. Thanked everyone all the time. He took the time to know everyone on a personal level.*
*One "favorite" story which has circulated among the Secret Service personnel was an incident early in his Presidency, when he came out of his room with a pistol tucked on his hip.
The agent in charge asked:"Why the pistol, Mr. President?"
He replied, "In case you boys can't get the job done, I can help."
It was common for him to carry a pistol. When he met with Gorbachev, he had a pistol in his briefcase. 
*Upon learning that Gary Hart was caught with Donna Rice, Reagan said, "Boys will be boys, but boys will not be Presidents." [He obviously either did not know or forgot JFK's and LBJ's sexcapades!]*
*She was very nice but very protective of the President; and the Secret Service was often caught in the middle. She tried hard to control what the President ate, and he would say to the agent "Come on, you gotta help me out."
*The Reagans drank wine during State dinners and special occasions only; otherwise, they shunned alcohol; the Secret Service could count on one hand the times they were served wine during their "family dinner". For all the fake bluster of the Carters, the Reagans were the ones who lived life as genuinely moral people.*

GEORGE H. W. & BARBARA BUSH:
*Extremely kind and considerate Always respectful. Took great care in making sure the agents' comforts were taken care of. They even brought them meals, etc.*
*One time Barbara Bush brought warm clothes to agents standing outside at Kennebunkport; one agent who was given a warm hat, and when he tried to nicely say "no thanks" even though he was obviously freezing, President Bush said "Son, don't argue with the First Lady, put the hat on.." He was the most prompt of the Presidents. He ran the White House like a well-oiled machine.*
She ruled the house and spoke her mind.

BILL & HILLARY CLINTON: 
*Presidency was one giant party. Not trustworthy --- he was nice because he wanted everyone to like him, but to him life is just one big game and party. Everyone knows of his sexuality.*
*She is another phony. Her personality would change the instant cameras were near. She hated with open disdain the military and Secret Service. She was another one who felt people are there to serve her. She was always trying to keep tabs on Bill Clinton.*

ALBERT GORE:
*An egotistical ass, who was once overheard by his Secret Service detail lecturing his only son that he needed to do better in school or he "would end up like these guys" --- pointing to the agents.*

GEORGE W. & LAURA BUSH: 
The Secret Service loved him and Laura Bush.
*He was also the most physically "in shape" who had a very strict workout regimen. The Bushes made sure their entire administrative and household staff understood to respect and be considerate of the Secret Service. KARL ROVE was the one who was the most caring of the Secret Service in the administration.*
*She was one of the nicest First Ladies, if not the nicest; she never had any harsh word to say about anyone.*

BARACK & MICHELLE OBAMA:
*"Clinton all over again" - hates the military and looks down on the Secret Service. He is egotistical and cunning; looks you in the eye and appears to agree with you, but turns around and does the opposite---untrustworthy. He has temper tantrums.*
*She is a complete r…..., who hates anybody who is not black; hates the military; and looks at the Secret Service as servants.*
